BSMI and Consumers' Foundation Jointly Released Test Results of Food Processors

Food processors have been gaining popularity at home along with the versatile functions they offers for the convenience and efficiency for home cooking. Besides, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of healthy eating and home-cooked meals, which could indirectly contribute to the popularity of food processors.

The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) in collaboration with the Consumers'  Foundation released test results of food processors randomly purchased from the market to check their compliance with relevant requirements. 10 different brands and models of food processors were purchased from major supermarkets and home appliance stores in Tainan as well as online shopping platforms in 2023. They were subject to labeling checks, comparison of key components and testing of quality items. The results of the tests showed that all items related to "quality" and "Commodity Inspection Mark" met the standards. However, 2 products did not comply with the "Chinese labeling" requirements, and 2 products did not meet the "key component comparison" criteria.

The BSMI urges consumers to purchase food processors that bear the Commodity Inspection Mark and to check the integrity of the Chinese labeling on the outer packaging, including information such as manufacturer's name, address, model, and specifications (e.g., voltage and power consumption). When using, consumers should carefully read the instructions, warnings, and precautions.

The Bureau reminds users to place the food processor on a flat surface out of reach of children and operate it only according to the instructions, warnings, and precautions provided in the manual to avoid direct contact with blades or other sharp parts. When cleaning and maintaining the food processor, users should strictly follow the instructions and precautions, unplug the power plug from the socket, and prevent water from entering the motorized body to avoid cuts and electrical hazards.

For the 2 products, of which the key components were different from those listed in the registration information, the companies are required to apply to the BSMI for approval of change of the key components. Registration of those products will be rescinded if the companies fail to do so.

For the 2 products that did not pass labeling checks, the BSMI will notify the companies to take corrective actions within a specified time limit. A fine of not less than NTD 100,000 and not more than NTD 1,000,000 will be imposed and their registration will be rescinded if corrective actions are not completed within the deadline.

The BSMI indicated that food processors are subject to mandatory inspection and are not allowed to be released from production premises or imported before completion of the inspection procedures. The BSMI implements an annual market surveillance program to continuously monitor the safety of products on the market. In case non-compliant products are found, the BSMI looks into the causes, makes an interview report and take actions in accordance with relevant regulations.
