BSMI Releases CNS 19894 on Requirements and Test Methods for Walking T.jpg ...

Taiwan has become an aged society since 2018 when the share of the population aged above 65 exceeded 14% in that year. Walking trolleys help maintain the quality and dignity of walking for the elderly and disabled persons by providing the stability and balance of users. They do not carry the full body weight of users while walking and can be equipped with accessories such as seats and shopping bags. The seats with brakes engaged can also be used for resting when the elderly and disabled persons feel tired.

The BSMI indicated that CNS 19894 "Walking Trolleys-Requirements and Test Methods," published on May 9, 2023, was developed based on ISO 19894:2019. It provides requirements relating to general safety, materials, safety of moveable and folding components as well as folding and adjusting mechanisms. It also specifies requirements for testing strength, torque, durability, appearance and stability. In addition, it requires information to be supplied by the manufacturer, including marking, user manuals, packaging, testing reports, etc.

According to the "Walking Assist Devices Market Outlook 2022-2027," published by Fact.MR, a US market research and consulting company, in October 2022, the global walking assist devices market will increase from a valuation of US$6.5 billion in 2022 to US$7.4 billion by 2027, with an expansion at a CAGR of 2.6%. The national standard developed by the BSMI on walking trolleys (CNS 19894) provides guidances for companies to design, manufacture and sell products that can be safely used by the elderly and disabled persons while walking and further reduce possible injuries by assisting in maintaining the balance of users.
