To help domestic industry to be well prepared for the government's goal of "2050 Net-Zero Emissions," the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) has been coordinating resources from different government bodies and private sectors to expand the capacity of verification of greenhouse gases in Taiwan since the end of 2021. Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC) and Taiwan Testing and Certification Center (ETC) were granted accreditation by Taiwan Accreditation Foundation (TAF) according to ISO/IEC 14065:2020, ISO/IEC 14064-3:2019 and ISO/IEC 17029:2019 on June 27, 2022. Organizations are welcomed to apply to these two verification bodies for GHG verification.

Knowing the status and hotspots of carbon emissions is critical to achieve net-zero emissions at the organization level. Enterprises are advised to consult "CNS 14064-1: 2021, Greenhouse gases-Part 1: Specification with guidance at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals" first and collect relevant data to establish GHG inventory, reports and statements. Depending on the needs for complying with regulations, fulfilling requests from international supply chains or improving self-management, they can then apply to third-party GHG verification bodies for verifying the accuracy of GHG inventory made by themselves and its compliance with regulations.

Enterprises may further implement GHG reduction measures, such as an energy management system, improvement of energy efficiency or use of alternative energy, to contribute to climate change mitigation.

TAF joined the IAF MLA on GHG verification in 2018 and has accredited 9 GHG verification bodies in Taiwan, including MIRDC and ETC. The GHG verification certificates issued by these GHG verification bodies will be recognized internationally. The BSMI will continue assisting domestic organizations in acquiring TAF accreditation and gradually enhancing the GHG verification capacity in Taiwan to meet the needs of domestic industries.
