The Taichung Branch was originally established under the previous Provincial Department of Agriculture and Forestry on January 1, 1947 , at the address of 1 Heping Street, Taichung City. In September 1957, the Taichung Branch was relocated to the current address at 70 Gongsyue Road.

The Taichung Branch was renamed as "Taichung Inspection Institute, Taiwan Provincial Inspection Bureau" on September 1, 1959, with the activities extended to cover inspection of industrial products.

The Taiwan Provincial Inspection Bureau was reorganized as the Bureau of Commodity Inspection & Quarantine (BCIQ), Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) in July 1967 and the Taichung Inspection Institute was placed under the newly established organization.

The Taichung Inspection Institute was renamed as Taichung Branch, BCIQ in April 1970 and promote a Total Quality Control Program under the BCIQ policies in 1976 to enhance the overall quality of our products.

The BCIQ was reorganized as the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) on January 26, 1999 and the Taichung Branch operated under the BSMI starting from March 16, 1999.
