Wireless chargers have been widely used by consumers to charge electronic devices, such as tablets and smart phones, because of their convenience. The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) in collaboration with the Department of Consumer Protection, Executive Yuan, released the test results of wireless chargers randomly purchased from the market to check their compliance with relevant safety requirements. 10 wireless chargers of different brands and models were purchased from physical stores, retailers and online platforms in 2021. The check included 3 items: quality tests (conducted disturbance, radiated disturbance and rise of temperature), comparison of components (physical appearance, interior structure and key components) and marking/labeling. The results showed that a total of 5 products failed to pass certain items of the check.

For the non-compliant products, the BSMI will take the following actions in accordance with relevant Articles of the Commodity Inspection Act:

1.2 products were placed on the market without completing the required inspection procedures. They failed all elements of the check. A fine at an amount of not less than NTD 250,000 and not more than NTD 2,500,000 (Article 60) will be imposed and the obligatory inspection applicants will be required to withdraw the products from the market or take corrective actions within a specified time limit (Article 63).

2.The other 3 products were certified under the Registration of Product Certification (RPC) Scheme. 

(1)2 products did not pass the quality tests, with one of them also failed the item on component comparison. The RPC certificates of these 2 products will be rescinded (Article 42). In addition, the business operators are required to withdraw the products from the market or take corrective actions within a specified time limit (Article 63-1). A fine of not less than NTD 100,000 and not more than NTD 1,000,000 will be imposed, if corrective actions are not completed within the time limit.

(2)1 product failed to comply with marking/labeling requirements. The business operators will be required to take corrective actions within a specified time limit (Article 59). A fine of not less than NTD 100,000 and not more than NTD 1,000,000 will be imposed, if corrective actions are not completed within the time limit, and the RPC certificate will also be rescinded (Article 42).

The BSMI indicated that wireless chargers are subject to mandatory inspection and are not allowed to be released from production premises or imported before completion of the inspection procedures. The BSMI implements an annual market surveillance program to continuously monitor the safety of products on the market. In case noncompliant products are found, the BSMI looks into the causes, makes an interview report and takes actions in accordance with relevant regulations.

The BSMI urges companies to ensure the safety of products and correctness of labeling so as to protect consumers' right and safety. On the other hand, consumers should only buy products that are labeled with the Commodity Inspection Mark.
