The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection, M.O.E.A reminds the ...

At the time of the Lunar New Year, every whole family gather together to celebrate the Lunar New Year, in order to prevent the public from closing doors and windows because of cold weather, or unable to correctly install "gas stove" and "gas water heater" (hereinafter referred to as gas appliances) according to the installation site, which may lead to accidents of carbon monoxide intoxication. The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) appeals to the public to be aware of the usage safety of gas appliances particularly, to maintain good ventilation when using gas appliances, and start from the aspects of purchase, installation as well as periodic inspection and maintenance, to prevent invisible killers-danger of carbon monoxide intoxication.

The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection indicated that every year from December to the following February is the peak period of carbon monoxide intoxication accidents domestically. In order to effectively prevent carbon monoxide intoxication, in addition to that the public should use instructions and precautions correctly, the public also should be aware of the following five main points particularly:
1.Shall be attached with the qualified "Mark" : the commodity body of gas appliance should be attached with "commodity inspection mark" (legend as figure  (Picture as attachment file))
2.To select the correct "type": select the appropriate type of gas appliance according to the ventilation environment condition, and type of gas (liquefied petroleum gas, natural gas or liquefied natural gas), etc. as specified in the usage requirement of installation site. In addition, in case of purchasing an outdoor roof top (RF) water heater, it should be installed in a well-ventilated outdoor location; in case of purchasing an indoor gas water heater, such as semi-closed forced exhaust (FE) and closed forced exhaust (FF) water heater, it should be installed appropriate exhaust pipe.
3.Be aware of the correct "installation": gas appliances should be installed by qualified "specific gas appliance installation and repair technician".
4.To maintain the "ventilation" of environment: avoid hanging mass clothes to block ventilation; in case of installing a window, one has to open it when using gas appliances, and those with gauze installations, one should be aware of the cleanup of dust simultaneously so as to maintain good ventilation.
5.To implement periodic "inspection and maintenance": gas appliances should be implemented inspection and maintenance by technicians with qualified certification or technicians of original manufacturer periodically, especially for those that have been used for over "five years," which should be noted for periodic maintenance to avoid accidents occurrence caused by aging parts.

The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection advises the public to take note of the usage safety of gas appliances particularly. Do not close the doors and windows because of cold weather, which may result in accidents of carbon monoxide intoxication caused by poor ventilation; in addition, even if the windows are open, in case of insufficient air convection is not good, carbon monoxide exhausts from gas appliances still may accumulate in the house gradually, hence the BSMI appeals to the public to maintain good ventilation for indoor environment, in order to fully prevent the incomplete combustion of gas, which may lead to occurrence of carbon monoxide intoxication accidents.
